San Siro Stadium, with its 75,817 seats, is now the largest capacity stadium in Italy.
Located in the Milan neighborhood of the same name, the facility has been named since 1980 after Giuseppe Meazza, one of Italy’s greatest soccer players, who wore the jerseys of both Inter and Milan. San Siro has earned the nickname “La Scala del Calcio,” because of its prestige and the importance of the events it hosts. In addition to Milan and Inter home matches, since 1980 the stadium has been the stage for legendary concerts, welcoming the greatest Italian and international artists.
The Stadium is designed according to high standards of comfort and safety and falls under UEFA Category 4, Europe’s highest classification. From a structural point of view, it is supported by four corner towers and seven intermediate towers that carry prestressed concrete box beams, on which the bleachers rest. The corner towers rise above the bleachers, reaching the roof of the Stadium.
1926
In 1925 Milan’s president, Piero Pirelli, urged the construction of a football stadium in the surroundings of the Ippodromo del Trotto.
Inspired by English stadiums, the facility was completed in 13 months at a cost of 5 million of Italian Lire. It consists of four straight grandstands and can hold up to 35,000 spectators. On September 19, 1926 it was inaugurated with the Milan-Inter derby.
1935
In 1935 the City of Milan after purchasing the stadium began an initial expansion work.
The work led to the construction of four connecting curves between the bleachers, increasing the capacity to 55,000 seats. Created to host Milan’s home matches, the stadium also became a “friendly ground” for Inter starting with the 1947-1948 season.
1955
A new load-bearing structure designed to support a second ring of bleachers is built, towering over and partly covering the existing ones.
The total capacity of the stadium thus reaches 85,000 seats, about 60,000 of which are seats. The architectural image of the facility is renewed by the introduction of helical ramps, which provide access to the second ring. Two years later, work on the night lighting system is completed, while ten years later the electronic light board is installed.
The stadium is dedicated to the memory of Giuseppe Meazza, an unforgettable Milanese champion who played with Inter and AC Milan, leaving a deep imprint on Italian soccer.
A two-time World Champion with the national team in 1934 and 1938, Meazza is remembered for his extraordinary talent, elegance on the field and strong personality that made him one of the sport’s most beloved symbols. The naming of the stadium in 1980 was a tribute to the champion who had passed away the previous year, in official recognition of his unique contribution to Italian soccer and his deep bond with the city of Milan.

1990
In preparation for the 1990 World Cup, the City of Milan launched an ambitious project to renovate the city’s stadium.
The goal was to create a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting the major sporting event. It was decided to design an innovative architectural solution, which included the addition of a third ring and the complete coverage of the 85,700 seats. This radical intervention transformed San Siro into one of the most modern and impressive arenas in Europe. The new stadium was officially inaugurated on April 25, 1990, a few weeks of hosting the opening match of the world tournament.
